A house built from the ground up

For Sherlyn Newberry, it was the frightening occurrence of a murder outside her apartment and the thoughtful mental exercise posed by her pastor that set the stage for her Habitat home moving date of Nov. 29, 2014.

She had been aware of Habitat advantages since 2005, demonstrated by her two sisters’ Habitat home-ownership. “But I wasn’t ready to consider it until recently, when soon after I moved into my apartment the crime started happening,” says Sherlyn, 33, a single mother with three children. A shooting took place between two gun-carriers outside her home in Warrington, and one person was killed. “I heard the noise and said, ‘Oh! What’s that?’ and I soon wanted to get off that territory!”

A short while later, like an epiphany in the making, came the occasion in her church, Sherlyn recalls, when the pastor “asked each of us in a class to name five things we could do, but not without God’s help, to improve our lives, and Habitat was one of those I listed. I realized then I could consider doing this.” She adds, “My Mom never owned a house, so I recognized this would be breaking the cycle as well.

“I immediately went down to the office.”
