Pensacola Habitat for Humanity Neighborhood Revitalization Team Coordinates Beautification Project in Brownsville and West Pensacola

Pensacola, FL (July 11, 2016) Pensacola Habitat for Humanity’s Neighborhood Revitalization (NR) team will partner with 50 teens from across the country in Brownsville and the Westside Garden District this July 18th – 22nd. Both communities are considered focus areas for the NR department as they are located within an established Community Redevelopment Area (CRA), which are special taxing districts that must meet statutory criteria for blight and the need of economic development.  Based on surveys conducted by the NR department, next week’s work will help build on the foundation of critical repair work completed last June.

House Painting 2These extensive surveys in the Westside Garden District, collected since 2012, have found that of 354 homes, 147 need minor repairs, 39 need a limited number of major repairs, and 7 need comprehensive renovation. This means that 55% of homes are in need of some type of repair, reinforcing the notion that communities throughout West Pensacola suffer from economic disinvestment and blight, reinforcing NR’s commitment to the area.

As a commitment to Pensacola Habitat’s promise to build communities and hope, NR’s inaugural critical repair project last June brought 100 out-of-state volunteers to work together to rehabilitate seven homes. As part of ‘Build-A-Thon’ in 2013, Pensacola Habitat carried out various Neighborhood Revitalization activities in the Westside Garden District including sidewalk repairs, right-of-way cleanups, and painting street address on curbs.

Another component of the NR Department’s work is their ability to provide resources and technical support in the field of community development and organization. Pensacola Habitat works closely with the Historic Brownsville Community, Inc., a grassroots community group, and the Westside Garden District Homeowner’s Association (in addition to various other community groups and homeowner associations), providing guidance and encouraging resident leadership.
