Aging in Place: Pensacola Habitat for Humanity and Publix Charities Team Up for Critical Home Repairs
PENSACOLA, Fla. – Pensacola Habitat for Humanity’s Community Development Program received significant support to its Aging in Place program with a recently awarded $125,000 grant from Publix Super Markets Charities.
This generous award will help the affiliate provide vital services to older Americans, including grab-bars, zero-entry doorways and showers, wheelchair ramps, weatherization initiatives, critical repairs and accessibility modifications designed to enable homeowners to remain safely in their owned homes.
A report based on information from the 2020 U.S. Census estimated that only 10% of American homes are “aging ready”, meaning they consist of a step-free entryway, bedroom and bathroom on the first floor and at least one accessibility feature in the bathroom. Through the life-changing opportunity provided by the funding from Publix Super Markets Charities, more local homeowners will be able to meet those requirements in 2025 and continue safely living in their existing homes in their older years.
“This latest incredible gift from a longtime supporter in Publix Super Markets Charities will allow us to offer the support people need to maintain their homeownership,” said Dakota Grilli, Pensacola Habitat for Humanity’s Community Development Manager. “By helping to keep homes safer and more reliable for our older neighbors, they can maintain a stronger sense of independence and community, while also avoiding the trauma of having to leave their homes. It’s wonderful to have a committed partner in serving our community and we can’t wait to put that money to good use serving Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties.”
