Habitat for Humanity's Response to Haiti
Habitat for Humanity, International is addressing shelter solutions for low-income families affected by the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010. Habitat has worked in Haiti for 26 years, providing more than 2,000 families with housing through a variety of initiatives including building new home construction, progressive building, home repairs and improvements.
In the immediate future Habitat plans to:
1. mobilize people to clear the way for shelter construction and home rehabilitation
2. distribute building materials and tools in shelter kits; shelter kits include building materials and tools and are used to build temporary shelters that can later be the foundation of a permanent home. Habitat builds structures in Haiti with hurricane- and earthquake-resistant features
3. construct transitional housing
