Pensacola Habitat for Humanity receives grant from NeighborWorks America to help increase access to revitalization and home preservation projects in Pensacola

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Pensacola Habitat for Humanity announced the organization received a $100,000 comprehensive community development grant this year from NeighborWorks America. Pensacola Habitat for Humanity will use this grant to help people experience better outcomes related to home health and preservation.

Many homeowners in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties can’t perform routine tasks due to the current accessibility and overall well-being of their homes. The nonprofit will use the grant to help current homeowners receive critical home repairs and services needed to improve their quality of life.

Pensacola Habitat for Humanity, a member of the national NeighborWorks network, will utilize these funds to perform home repairs such as landscaping, accessibility modifications and other vital home modifications.

“This grant will be invested directly into the Cantonment community, one of our focus communities,” said Pensacola Habitat Director of Programs Besty McDonald. “We will complete eight critical home repairs to help older adults age comfortably in their own homes by installing wheelchair ramps and other necessary modifications. In the spring of 2023, we will hold a Rock the Block event in the Cantonment neighborhood to beautify that neighborhood with minor exterior repairs and landscaping.”

NeighborWorks America announced that it is awarding nearly $1.7 million in grants to 26 NeighborWorks network organizations to incorporate a comprehensive community development approach into their work and help produce meaningful change for their communities. Comprehensive community development is a resident-led approach focused on place that aims to improve lives and strengthen communities.

“Communities are facing challenges, such as access to affordable housing, addressing health disparities or creating economic opportunity," said Paul Singh, NeighborWorks America's Vice President of Community Initiatives, "and NeighborWorks America believes the best approach to help solve them is a comprehensive one. In order to be equitable and sustainable, residents and local stakeholders need to be the ones to drive meaningful change in their neighborhoods and create vibrant local communities that offer people equitable opportunities to thrive.”
